Plainmoor

Torquay on development mission

Torquay are not only looking to gain promotion to the Football League when the new Blue Square Premier season kicks off, they are greatly improving the facilities at Plainmoor as well.

The Gulls ended third in the 2007/08 season and were bought over by a ten-man consortium of local businessmen.

And the added money provided by the takeover will be used to upgrade the club ground according to United's chief executive Colin Lee .

He revealed that around £150,000 is being spent to turn Plainmoor into a seven-day-a-week entertainment operation through the Torbay Business Forum.

The club are also planning to incorporate numerous changes including Championship - standard floodlights, impressive new bar facilities, a transformed restaurant and a new-style stadium catering operation.

Lee explained the idea behind the developments to This Is South Devon: "We all understand that success on the pitch is the most important thing.

"But when we first came into the club last summer, we wanted to improve as many areas of the football club as we could.

"Apart from the work on the team, we have now introduced a new Youth Scheme, which I always felt was massively important.

"But we now need to encourage people to come to Torquay United through the week as well as on Saturdays.

"If customers get good service, good food in a good atmosphere and then on a Saturday their teams wins as well - well, that's the perfect situation.

"We can't guarantee the last part, although we are working very hard on that too, but we are certainly aiming to create the rest of the package.

"There's about £150,000 worth of investment going in here.

"It's a case of not standing still in any area of the business."
