Phil Law has resigned as chairman of Cambridge United with immediate effect, strangely blaming the fans, and not his questionable decisions as the reason for his departure.
Last week he accused certain supporters of being malevolant in trying to remove him from his position.
His failure to admit his own role in making his position untenable is typical of Law's reign, in which allegations of improper conduct had blighted his stay.
He vehemently denied accepting £2,000 (from his employers York Construction) compensation to cancel a friendly with Cambridge City, despite many supporters claiming they had solid proof he had.
He was also heavily criticised for taking on board advice from a rival chairman about accepting Reading's bid to buy the sell on fee for a measly £350,000.
Add to that the interference of Ben Farrell's supposed transfer to Histon and the banning of the 'Burton 3' more or less made his position untenable.
There were thoughts he would last till the end of the season, but as the pressure built up, he realised he had to go.
The club hope this will pave the way for Chief Executive Norman Gautrey to withdraw his own resignation, who was hoping to step down after learning of Law's disastrous decision making.
Board member Terry Baker will step in as temporary chairman until further notice.
