Connell out to prove a point

New Grimsby Town striker Alan Connell says he is aiming to prove his worth to the club's supporters by helping to fire the Mariners to promotion this season.

The 27-year-old joined Neil Wood's side just over two weeks ago and bagged his second goal in a Grimsby shirt in their 4-2 Lincolnshire Senior Cup semi-final victory against Lincoln City at Blundell Park.

Connell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "It's up to me to prove that I'm 'too good' for the Conference this season.

"I've got to prove that to myself, my team-mates and the supporters.

"That's what it's about. Every season you try to improve and prove yourself to people.

"I'll give it my best shot and nothing will give me greater satisfaction than doing that this season and helping the club get back up."

And Connell has revealed his motivation for joining Grimsby, saying the quick, passing game is what attracted him to Blundell Park.

He added: "It was one of the main reasons why I joined the club.

"The manager made it clear that's how he wanted the team to play. I'm really enjoying it.

"We're going to have to mix it up this season, but it's good that we are capable of playing that way.

"He (Woods) wants us to play football and has made it clear he won't sign players who can't the play the game the way he wants us to.

"I feel we've got the players to do that, but I also think we've got the characters to dig in and grind out results too - which could be very important this year.

"It was a bit strange in the first-half, it seemed there was a goal with every attack.

"But I thought some of our passing and movement was very good. We kept the ball, had purpose and attacked with pace.

"There's still work to do regarding organisational stuff - but that's starting to come together.

"We're getting there, slowly but surely."
