Southport boss chasing reinforcements

Southport boss Liam Watson has confirmed two failed bids for defenders whilst also revealing he is keen on bringing midfielder Godfrey Poku back to Haig Avenue.

Watson has been working hard behind the scenes in a bid to bolster his defensive options, but will have to return to the drawing board after missing out on two unnamed players.

With Chris Lever and Earl Davis currently on the Sandgrounders injury table, Watson remains optimistic he'll be able to bring in a few face before Saturday's clash with Hayes & Yeading United at Kingfield Stadium.

He told the Southport Visiter: "I spent hours and hours on Sunday and Monday and thought I had a couple of players sorted," said Watson, whose side are eighth in the Conference table.

"The centre-half we were after declined our offer. His club agreed and we had it all sorted but the player did not want to drop down.

"I made an offer for a young centre half from a lower level, someone we were willing to pay money for, but his club quoted us a ridiculous offer."

With regards to his hopes of bringing Poku back to Haig Avenue after a successful loan earlier this term, Watson added: "I'm still hopeful Poku will happen but a lot depended on Luton's game last night."
