U's set to bounce back

Saturday March 15, 2008

Cambridge United v Woking

Prices correct at time of writing (7pm, Thursday March 13, 2008).

Home 8/15 Draw 12/5 Away 5/1

Manager Jimmy Quinn was really disappointed after Cambridge's defeat against Farsley but we make them the favourites here, while Woking are the outsiders. A lot has been said about Frank Gray's young Woking team and I think he will build on that next season. Hopefully they will escape relegation as they are one of the established Blue Square Premier teams and I think next season we might see them creep up to mid-table. You've really got to fancy the home team and they should bounce back here.

Verdict: Home win

Exeter City v Droylsden

Home 2/9 Draw 4/1 Away 9/1

Droylsden are certainly doomed and I probably wouldn't back them if they were 20/1 and they really do need to start planning for life in the Blue Square North. Exeter are the shortest favourites of the weekend in the Blue Square Premier. I can't see Droylsden getting a draw. Exeter need to concentrate on getting back in the play-off positions because one team from Cambridge, Torquay, Stevenage, Burton and Exeter will miss out in the race for a play-off place. It's a home win for me.

Verdict: Home win

Forest Green Rovers v Halifax Town

Home 5/6 Draw 23/10 Away 11/4

Halifax could have been in real danger of going down and were in poor form but are now 17th in the table, just one place behind Oxford.

Forest Green did have play-off aspirations and the goals of Stuart Fleetwood kept them up there. I think their current position of 8th is a fantastic finish for them but they'll be thinking they've slipped away.

Forest Green are the favourites and that's probably quite a decent bet, as Halifax have struggled against teams in the top half of the table.

Verdict: Home win

Grays Athletic v Altrincham

Home 8/11 Draw 12/5 Away 16/5

Altrincham are just one point above the drop zone and they've played more games than any other team down at the bottom. They are now our favourites for relegation along with the bottom three teams. Grays are capable of the odd good result and are the favourites. Their games are not that high-scoring so maybe a 1-0 victory to Grays might be the call here at 7/1.

Verdict: Home win

Histon v Rushden & Diamonds

Home 6/5 Draw 9/4 Away 15/8

Histon boss Steve Fallon will make sure his team don't give up on any slim play-off hopes. They've had a fantastic season and will be happy to be so high in the table in their first season in the Blue Square Premier. They are the favourites, while Rushden are the outsiders. The Diamonds are very in and out this season. They are capable of the odd good result but when you just go and trust them they end up slipping up and that's exactly what they've been doing all season so I'm going for a home win.

Verdict: Home win

Northwich Victoria v Crawley Town

Home 13/8 Draw 11/5 Away 11/8

Northwich remain third bottom and are capable of the odd decent result against other teams in the bottom half. Crawley are the favourites and are another side whose season seems to be over, they are safe from relegation but nowhere near the play-offs. I'm going for a draw in this clash.

Verdict: Draw

Salisbury v Farsley Celtic

Home 4/7 Draw 12/5 Away 9/2

The promise of full-time football at Thorstle's Nest for Farsley is a step closer to reality as Celtic are now 19th in the table. Altrincham are on the same number of points but have played more games. Nineteenth place a while back seemed a distant prospect but now Farsley are really building. They could establish themselves in the Blue Square Premier for next season and who knows if they go full-time, they could really do something next year. They are the outsiders here while Salisbury are the favourites and in good form. I'm going for a draw here.

Verdict: Draw

Stafford Rangers v Oxford United

Home 7/4 Draw 9/4 Away 5/4

Oxford's season has been a complete write-off and I can't see many people trusting The U's with their cash, even with United going to a place like Stafford, who look doomed for relegation. I can't trust Rangers either with my cash in this one so I'll probably plump for the draw.

Verdict: Draw

Best Bet

Double - Forest Green at 5/6 to beat Halifax and Grays at 8/11 to beat Altrincham
