Braintree Town 0 Maidenhead United 2

A terrific Tyron Smith volley from a Lee Newman corner midway through the second half set United on the road to a comfortable 2-0 win at Braintree.

With Welling losing at Hampton, the win firmly cements Maidenhead's fifth place play off spot with a five point cushion over the Wings in sixth.

The effects of Saturday's gruelling win at Newport were plain to see in the Maidenhead line up with Pat Sappleton, Mustafa Tyriaki and Ashley Smith all lacking the fitness required to start being replaced by Jermaine Hinds, Rocky Baptiste and Lee Newman respectively.

The first half saw both teams show plenty of attacking ambition without being able to create chances to test the goalkeeper.

In the run up to half time both sides spurned good opportunities to open the scoring. A Braintree breakaway from a long ball forward saw Sean Mark shoot wide under pressure from Hinds.

Similarly a pin point cross from the right wing by Baptiste was headed wide by Richard Pacquette with the goal at his mercy.

The second half continued much in the way of the first until the 65th minute when Tyron Smith launched his missile of a shot to score.

After Shane Gore had tipped a Gareth Williams free kick onto the bar with twenty minutes left it was Maidenhead all the way to the end. Twice in a minute Pacquette was denied the chance to cap probably his last game for the Magpies with a goal.

Firstly he sweetly struck a shot from a Smith cross which produced a super one handed save from Craig Holloway.

The following good work from Ashley Nicholls and Tyriaki, the striker beat Holloway only for Andy Porter to clear off the line.

Dave Clarke finally sealed the win with three minutes remaining, his shot being helped over the line by hapless Iron captain Billy Burgess.
