Barrow 1-1 Torquay Utd

Paul Buckle's Torquay United maintained a play-off berth on Tuesday night after being held to a 1-1 draw by Barrow at Holker Street.

The Gulls have left Cumbria with destiny still in their own hands, but the draw with Barrow means they will have to beat league leaders and automatic promotion chasers Burton Albion at Plainmoor this Sunday to absolutely guarantee their play-off berth.

Yet, what is now apparent, the Gulls will have the character, belief and confidence to see job through and make the top five, after battling back from a goal down to claim their point at Holker Street.

Barrow of course, were looking for the victory that would ensure their Blue Square Premier League status.

The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute when Jason Walker netted from Brendan McGill's cross. But United hit back and Blair Sturrock spurned a great chance from close range when putting over the bar to level matters.

Barrow had much riding on the game and missed the opportunity to double their advantage twice before the interval with Brendan McGill in particular drawing a fantastic save from Scott Bevan as the Gulls were left trailing.

However, manager Paul Buckle got his side on track over the half time cuppa and the Gulls roared out of the blocks for the second period. Skipper Chris Hargreaves got United back on level terms when being alert to Danny Stevens cross to finish well.

The Gulls then had to replace goalkeeper Scott Bevan with an hour of the game gone through injury, meaning Michael Poke came off the bench to see the match out for United.

Barrow bookings: Hunt.

Torquay bookings: Hargreaves.

Ref: R West.
