Oxford Utd 1-2 Hayes & Yeading

Hayes & Yeading United claimed all three points against high-flying Oxford United at Kassam Stadium on Tuesday evening despite being reduced to ten men.

The result sees Chris Wilder's side slip down to second in the league standings, trailing leaders Stevenage by two points with a game in hand.

The home side looked out of sorts in the first half and it was no surprise when Hayes and Yeading broke the deadlock through former Oxford frontman Steve Basham in the 25th minute.

Winger Esmond James sent in a cross from the right-hand flank and Craig Watkins flicked the ball to his left where Basham turned before firing a shot in off the right-hand post.

Yellows boss Chris Wilder brought on Ashley Cain for Rhys Day just after the half-hour mark but the tactical change didn't have the desired effect as Basham popped up again just before half-time to further extend his side's lead.

Adam Green sent in an inviting cross from a corner two minute before the half-time break and an unmarked Basham rose well to head home his second of the evening.

Hayes & Yeading were reduced to ten men just minutes after the restart when James picked up his second yellow card of the evening for a foul on Sam Deering.

Oxford piled on the pressure as they looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage and pulled one back in the 53rd minute when Simon Clist found the target with a well struck volley.

However, Wilder's side were unable to break down a determined Hayes & Yeading defence due to a lack of cutting edge in front of goal and the visitors held firm to record a surprise victory.

Oxford bookings: Wright.

Hayes & Yeading bookings: James, Masters.

Sent off: James (48).

Referee: Carl Berry (Surrey).

Attendance: 5,045.
