Jefferson Louis struck twice as Rushden and Diamonds humiliated Gateshead 8-0 in a record scoreline at Nene Park on Saturday.
The hosts recorded the biggest win of the Blue Square Premier season thanks to Louis's brace (50, 78), coupled with efforts by Jamie Stuart (6), Max Porter (45), Mark Byrne (54) , Lee Tomlin (65), Craig Farrell (81) and Simon Downer (85).
Oxford United missed a chance to overtake Stevenage at the summit after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kettering at Kassam Stadium. The U's took a deserved lead through Francis Green's (36) close-range effort but James Dance (42) equalised shortly after for the play-off chasing Poppies.
Cambridge extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 2-1 victory over Histon at Abbey Stadium. Paul Carden's late winner bagged the points after Scott Neilson cancelled out Andy Pugh's opener for the visitors.
Former Wrexham striker Tom Craddock came back to haunt the club as his 35th minute winner saw high-flying Luton oust the Dragons 1-0 at Kenilworth Road.
Wimbledon kept their promotion hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne. The Wombles prevailed thanks to goals on either side of the break by Glen Poole and Danny Kedwell.
At the bottom of the table, Grays Athletic earned a creditable point against Hayes and Yeading following a goalless draw at New Recreation Ground.
