Gateshead 2-1 Barrow

Gateshead boosted their chances of retaining their Blue Square Premier status with a crucial win over fellow relegation candidates Barrow at the Gateshead International Stadium on Tuesday.

Peter Winn's early goal was cancelled out by a Jason Walker strike but Phil Turnbull found the winning goal for The Heed who move into 20th in the standings, a place above their opponents.

Former Barrow loanee Winn got on the end of Andy Parkinson's cross after just seven minutes to put the hosts in front.

The Bluebirds thought they had equalised seven minutes later but Mark Boyd's goal was disallowed by the match official.

However, ten minutes before the break the visiting team did level matters through Walker who went past Heed goalkeeper Paul Farman before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

It didn't take Ian Bogie's men long to respond and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Turnbull's rifle of a shot beat Tim Deasy in the Barrow goal.

There were no further goals in the second half even though the visitors piled on the pressure in search of the equaliser.

Gateshead bookings: Winn, Curtis, Clare, Armstrong
