Gateshead 1-0 Altrincham

Gateshead bounced back to winning ways with a deserved victory over Graham Heathcote's Altrincham at the International Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The victory gives Ian Bogie's men a valuable three points and sees them leapfrog Eastbourne Borough into 19th place in the Blue Square Premier standings.

The hosts produced the first real effort of the game in the 17th minute when striker Brian Wake fired just wide of the back post with an angled shot.

Wake should have scored in the 20th minute when Peter Winn whipped in an inviting cross but the striker headed over the crossbar from just six yards out.

Altrincham grew in confidence as the game progressed with Nicky Clee firing just wide from outside the box on the half-hour mark.

Striker Chris Denham forced a save from Gateshead goalkeeper Paul Farman moments later but the Robins were unable to push on and break the deadlock.

The breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute when attacking full-back Craig Baxter unleashed an audacious effort from 35 yards which beat Coburn and sent the home supporters into joyous celebration.

Altrincham piled forward in injury time but Gateshead held firm to claim a valuable three points.

Gateshead bookings: Baxter.

Altrincham bookings: Denham.

Ref: Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire).

Att: 489.
