Wrexham 1-0 Forest Green

Manager Dean Saunders breathed a sigh of relief after a goal from Wes Baynes at the death gave Wrexham three points against lowly Forest Green.

It was not a convincing victory for the Dragons but it mattered little when Baynes drove home a 20-yard free-kick in the 89th minute.

Ollie Thorne's foul on Nathan Fairhurst led to the opportunity and also resulted in a second yellow card and early shower for the Rovers man.

It was a tough break for the struggling visitors, who had dominated the first half but missed a good chance to take the lead when skipper Jon Smith completely mis-kicked his shot from eight yards.

Jared Hodgkiss then blazed over the bar before Wrexham had their first sniff at goal when Marc Williams' heavy first touch allowed Rovers defenders to crowd him out.

Danny Powell was unlucky to see his goalbound effort blocked on the line after Dragons goalkeeper Chris Maxwell failed to deal with a high ball.

Williams had a goal disallowed in the second half when he netted from a rebound after his initial header hit the bar, but the referee ruled that he had knocked the ball from Rovers goalkeeper Terry Burton's hands.

Substitute David Brown had a shot that slipped out of Maxwell's hands with nine minutes left, but Curtis Obeng reacted quickest to clear the ball. But Wrexham got the telling goal just before time.

Wrexham bookings: Jones, Fleming

Forest Green bookings: McDonald, Rocastle, Thorne
