York 2-1 Wrexham

York equaled a club record of eight successive wins with their nervy 2-1 win over Wrexham on Saturday.

Chris Carruthers headed his side into a sixth minute lead with Richard Brodie adding a second in the 81st minute. Andrew Fleming pulled a goal back a minute later but York held on for the win.

The Minstermen maintain third place in the Blue Square Premier - just nine points behind leaders Oxford with the Dragons holding onto 15th place.

York started the stronger of the two sides with Brodie the main instigator in the opening exchanges. But it was Carruthers, who found himself unmarked to head home after a good move. Michael Rankine was sent clear down the right flank before sending in a cross that the goalscorer met with ease.

Wrexham came close to finding an equaliser on 25 minutes but Gareth Taylor's shot from the centre of the goal area was deflected behind for a corner.

Carruthers had a chance to add to York's lead just before the end of the first half but his free kick flew just wide of the post.

Sakho tested Michael Ingham on the hour mark with a volley, having latched onto Wes Baynes' free kick, but the keeper was well-placed to make the save.

Ingham then did exceptionally well when he tipped Baynes' fierce drive over the bar but Chris Maxwell at the other end could do nothing to keep out Brodie after making a great save to deny Lawless. The rebound fell for Brodie, who nodded home unchallenged.

Fleming got his side back into the tie a minute later when he converted a Curtis Obeng cross and despite raising the tempo in the final minutes, York held on to claim all three points.
