Danny Crow

Cambridge Utd 1-0 Chester

Cambridge United striker Danny Crow spared his side the blushes after popping up with an injury-time winner against Chester City on Tuesday evening.

The encounter started at a slow pace with the first effort on goal only coming after 12 minutes of play.

Chester's Ben Wilkinson saw his goalbound effort from 20 yards comfortably saved by Danny Potter and midway through the first half James Owen also saw his effort denied by the Cambridge goalkeeper.

Cambridge striker Chris Holroyd went close on the half-hour but a lack of cutting edge let him down in the final third.

Chester looked the stronger of the two sides at the half-time break but the hosts upped their performance in the second period.

The U's had a penalty appeal turned down just after the break when Holroyd clashed with Chester goalkeeper Jon Danby in the area.

The visitors were doing well to frustrate Cambridge with their well organised defence but they finally buckled under the pressure with the final whistle looming.

Robbie Willmott sent in an inviting cross and Crow just managed to beat Danby to the ball, heading over the line to help his side claim all three points.

Cambridge bookings: Pitt, Willmott.

Chester bookings: Roberts, Rule, Owen, Barry.

Ref: D Ford (Leicestershire).
