Brodie on target again

York 3-0 Mansfield

York kept pace at the top of the Blue Square Premier with a convincing 3-0 win over Mansfield on Boxing Day.

Richard Brodie added to his tally as the league's top scorer with two before Michael Gash made it three.

The Minstermen made it 10 wins in 11 games are now six points behind leaders Oxford and four behind Stevenage in second.

The visitors had the first real chance of the match after just 30 seconds as Jon Challinor's shot on target was cleared off the line before Michael Brough placed the rebound over the bar.

But it was York, who settled into their rhythm and created much of the play in the first half, and were rewarded after just 21 minutes.

Brodie made the most of a poor clearance from Alan Marriott to head home from close range.

And York were two-up within minutes of the second half kicking off as Luke Jones brought down Brodie in the box, a tackle that was deemed to be a red card.

Brodie netted the spot kick himself to leaving 10-man Mansfield with a mountain to climb.

Substitute Ryan Williams threatened the home goal from a corner that needed to be cleared off the line as the game wore on before pulling a shot just wide of the goal after some neat interplay with Jake Speight.

But it was York that finished the game off as Gash replaced Michael Rankine on 79 minutes with the substitute making his mark just two minutes later.

Brodie weaved his way into the box before setting up Gash for an easy finish from 16 yards.
