U's boss Gary Brabin

Brabin unhappy over U's display

Cambridge United boss Gary Brabin is displeased with the lack of continuity shown by his team when they met York City on the weekend.

Brabin opted to go for a 4-3-3 formation in the hope of finding the back of the net, this however proved futile as The U's could only manage one goal attempt all game.

"I just thought our attacking play was non-existent. We're a lot better than that," Brabin told Cambridge News.

"We've got some good forwards and, at the minute, they're all chomping at the bit to play.

"We went to 4-3-3 against Wrexham and it worked well and I thought it was time to try it again. I wanted to put Macca (McEvilly) back in because he did great when he came on for 20 minutes last Sunday.

"He did well in the first half and showed the work rate I want from him, but we didn't get the ball down and play as much as I'd have liked.

"The things we work on every day we just didn't do enough of.

"Overall, I wasn't happy with the performance. There were a few individuals who fell below the standards I expect and I had a word with them afterwards."

The only silver lining for Brabin was the outstanding performance by captain and assistant manager Paul Carden.

"I thought Paul was the pick of the bunch. The amount of ground he covered to help his team-mates was outstanding," Brabin praised.

Even though the game was frustrating for Brabin to watch, he was still optimistic and pleased about the way The U's defended, keeping another clean sheet.

"You can't get a better back four than Gleese (Dan Gleeson), Phil Bolland, Wayne Hatswell and Anthony Tonkin and I've come to expect that sort of performance from them.

"It was a great save by Pottsy (Danny Potter) in the first half to keep it 0-0, but they've all been outstanding week in, week out.

"There are two sides to our game. There's the doggedness that doesn't want to concede goals and we achieved that on Saturday. But there's also a free-flowing, footballing side that has got goals in it and we didn't live up to that."

Cambridge entertain Lewes on Tuesday night.
