Colin Walker

York Boss to meet old club

York boss Colin Walker will come up against his former team on Tuesday night when York City take on Barnsley in a pre-season game at KitKat Crescent.

Besides Walker, York head coach Eric Winstanley and youth team boss Neil Redfearn have also had stints at the Tykes.

Although the result won't be that important to Walker, the game will definitely have that extra bit of bite to it, even though the Championship outfit will be missing a number of first team players.

Walker scored 12 goals in 24 appearances for Barnsley and later took up a number of coaching positions for the club.

Winstanley spent 20 years on the coaching staff at the club after finishing an 11-year playing spell.

Walker told The Press: "We have got to be as professional as we can.

"We are working hard to get the best out of our players, but obviously it is going to be very, very nice to pit my wits against the club I have such fond memories of.

"It is about how the players prepare themselves for it. They have trained a lot and Crawley is getting nearer and nearer.

"I have been to Barnsley with the reserves, but this is my first time meeting them as a manager.

"We have prepared for this game as we have for the others. We are playing against a Championship side. It will be a great test and we are looking forward to it."

The York boss will be without midfielder Steven Hogg and could also be without the services of Richard Brodie, who picked up an injury during training.

Walker added: "I am very pleased with the way things have been going. It is every thing I thought it would be. It is really my first pre-season with my squad. They have bonded really well. Everyone is looking really good."
