York staff and supporters have expressed their devastation at the theft of a highly prized photo of the Promotion winning team of 1992-93 from the Social Club after Tuesday nights friendly with Barnsley FC.
The picture, which measures around 4 feet x 5 feet was taken from the wall in the entrance to the newly refurbished Kit Kat Crescent club sometime between the final whistle and the club closing its doors after the last drinkers left for the night.
It features the players on the Wembley pitch celebrating their Play-Off victory over Crewe when Wayne Hall scored the decisive penalty following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.
City fan and match day 50/50 co-coordinator Ian Tyssen, who along with fellow York Minstermen members has spent many hours working on the clubs' refurbishment commented, "I can't believe someone could stoop so low, it makes me wonder whether all the effort is worthwhile".
Club Secretary, Nick Bassett said: "I have now put the matter in the hands of the police who seem very confident that they will be able to find the culprit as the picture is so high profile.
"Someone somewhere will know what has happened to the picture and I appeal for them to come forward with information.
"This act shows great disrespect to the club and it's supporters and I hope that the thief has enough conscience to do the right thing and return it immediately".
Barnsley supporters are also being asked for any information which may lead to the recovery of the picture as some of them may have used the club after the entertaining 2-2 draw.
A total of 367 fans made the trip across from South Yorkshire for the friendly fixture.
Anyone with information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7.
