The Bootham Crescent crowd witnessed an intriguing goalless draw when play-off rivals York City and Luton Town clashed on Tuesday night.

The poor surface at York's home ground did not hamper the hosts in the opening period as Michael Rankine fired the first shot at Mark Tyler's goal after just five minutes.

However, the Hatters number one made a good save to keep the scores level.

A couple of minutes later Tyler watched Chris Carruthers's effort sail wide before Alex Lawless' long-range shot flashed past his upright.

Although the hosts had the better of the early chances, it was Luton who almost broke the deadlock before the break when Janos Kovacs headed just wide of Michael Ingham's goal.

Moments later Ingham was called into action though as he had to react sharply to save Rossi Jarvis' effort.

After the break the home side took control and Tyler made a stunning save in the 53rd minute to deny James Meredith's powerful shot.

Then Luton boss Richard Money made a double change and this almost bore dividends as French defender Claude Gnakpa and Tom Craddock wasted half chances.

The Minstermen almost had the final say late on as Tyler made a crucial save off Lawless' deflected shot but in the end honours were even.

The result leaves York in third place on 60 points with Luton fourth just four points back.
