Josh Simpson
Cambridge City midfielder Josh Simpson has emerged as one of the summer's hottest transfer prospects.
Histon were the first club to show an interest in the talented 21-year-old, but fell out of the race after a war of words with City manager Gary Roberts.
The relegated club's neighbours, Cambridge United then voiced their adoration of the former U's player.
Simpson helped the Lilywhites hold United to a 1-1 pre-season draw on Tuesday night and impressed Gary Brabin.
The U's mentor told Cambridge News: "He's someone we're keeping an eye on. The kid did well last night, but it's early stages at the moment.
"I haven't spoken to Cambridge City or their manager, but I saw him the last time he played for Cambridge United and he didn't do himself any harm last night."
But if Brabin is really keen on signing Simpson, he needs to launch a quick bid, as both the midfielder and striker Michael Gash are set to undergo trials with Ebbsfleet United.
And to add to the urgency, League Two outfit Dagenham & Redbridge are also reportedly keeping an eye on Simpson.
City boss Roberts said: "Michael was excellent and put a few pounds on his value and any watching scouts would have been pleased with Josh as well.
"They're the two everyone is looking at. It might be a double-edged sword for us and I'd think it's more of a possibility than not that they'll go before the start of the season."
