Dave Kitson
Blue Square Premier outfit Cambridge United will receive a massive cash windfall after Dave Kitson completed his £5.5million transfer to Premier League newcomers Stoke City.
The 28-year-old featured in 123 matches for United during a two-year tenure, before leaving for the Royals for a transfer fee of £150,000 in 2003.
The Abbey Stadium outfit have received £200,000 since Kitson's departure as part of the clauses which were inserted in the deal.
And they now look set to receive 20% of the fee commanded for his latest transfer.
United chairman Phil Law told Cambridge News: "I don't know how much we'll make yet, but Reading have been very good in all their dealings with us and I firmly believe they'll be above board and reasonable with us.
"Whatever we end up with will be great and give us an opportunity to stabilise.
"It's all money that we haven't budgeted on, but in the back of our minds, we've got a plan of how we'd want to invest that cash and it would probably be over a two or three-year period.
"For once, we don't have to have a great big black hole we have to fill and we aren't going to sign a couple of £200,000 strikers, which may disappoint some people.
"The money is going to be carefully looked after and instead of lurching from one financial crisis to another, it would be nice to think we've got a bit of a cushion."
