Cambridge Utd 0-0 Altrincham

Cambridge United's superb run of form was brought to a dead halt in a goalless draw at home to Altrincham.

Manager Martin Ling was still absent through illness, so Paul Carden and Jez George named an unchanged squad from the one that handed Forest Green a 7-0 thrashing on the weekend.

Another result of that magnitude was never on the cards, in fact Altrincham came close to springing a surprise in the second minute when Chris Senior was put clean through by Dale Johnson's header, only for Brian Saah to make an excellent block.

United looked threatening throughout, with Chris Holroyd in particular causing the visiting defence plenty of problems, but the final ball was often found wanting.

Andy Parkinson scrambled the ball over the line just after the hour in the wake of some superb build-up play from Holroyd, only for the linesman's flag to curtail the home side's celebrations.

They had the ball in the back of the net again fifteen minutes from time, but Wayne Hatswell was denied by another offside decision.

In the end the spoils had to be shared on a night of frustration.

Cambridge Utd bookings: Gleeson, Tonkin, Willmott.

Altrincham bookings: Doughty, Smith, Danylyk.

Attendance: 2,749

Referee: Gary Jerden (Essex).
