Cambridge Utd 2-0 Wrexham

Cambridge United moved up fourth place in the league standings on Saturday with a deserved victory over a goal-shy Wrexham at Abbey Stadium.

The Dragons have now gone three straight games without finding the net and find themselves sitting in 16th position with a disappointing 10 points from nine fixtures.

The hosts got off to flying start when Wayne Hatswell drilled a free-kick from the edge of the box into the bottom-left corner.

And Wrexham goalkeeper Chris Maxwell had to be on his toes two minutes later to deny a volleyed effort from Chris Holroyd.

In fact, Maxwell was kept busy for the remainder of the half as Cambridge went in search of a second goal.

The Dragons came close to drawing level in the 67th minute but Lamine Sakho saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by Anthony Tonkin.

The U's finally put the result beyond doubt in the 80th minute when Robbie Willmott beat his marker by cutting inside from the left wing and fired a shot into the bottom-left corner from close range.

Cambridge bookings: Willmott.

Wrexham bookings: Assoumani, Westwood, G Taylor.

Referee: Nick Kinseley (Essex).

Attendance: 2,823.
