Cambridge Utd 2-0 Eastbourne

Cambridge United secured their first win of the season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Eastbourne Borough at the Abbey Stadium.

James Jennings provided the inspiration for Cambridge, laying on an assist and then scoring a cracking free kick to thrill the home fans.

The U's left-back, only allowed to play after his club appealed his red card against Mansfield on Saturday, delivered a curling corner as early as the seventh minute which Josh Coulson buried at the far post.

The U's defence remained resilient throughout the first half, with the biggest Eastbourne threat coming in the form of Ross Treleaven's long throws.

Just before the break the home side doubled their lead after Danny Wright was fouled 25-yards out. Jennings stepped up and swung a delightful free kick past Rikki Banks in the Eastbourne goal.

Banks was kept busy in the second half while Andy Atkin came closest for the Sports with his headed hitting the cross-bar.

The win takes Martin Ling's men up to 17th in the league standings.

Cambridge bookings: Willmott, Brown.

Eastbourne Borough bookings: Brinkhurst, Strevett, Baker.
