Brewers eye Shaw return

Halifax Town striker Jon Shaw is reportedly being head hunted by Nigel Clough to lure him back to Burton Albion.

Shaw first joined the Brewers in 2004 and went onto make 101 appearances with a goal tally of 2006.

He left for the Shay in 2007 but has been placed on the transfer list as club is currently experiencing financial straits since their demotion to the UniBond League.

The move would be mutually beneficial to Shaw and Clough, who is still in need of a suitable replacement for departed top scorer Daryl Clare.

But the 42-year-old manager has warned that the Shaymen's asking price and interest from other Football League clubs could the obstacle to stand in Shaw's way.

Shaw first signed for Burton in 2004 and went onto score 33 goals in 123 appearances. With the signing of Clare, Shaw battled to secure a place in Clough's starting line-up, prompting his move to Halifax.

The switch proved to be motivation Shaw needed and he went onto score 27 goals last season and earn an England 'C' cap.

Clough told Non League Daily: "It's no secret that we're looking to sign a striker and Jon's record speaks for itself.

"We thought it was the right decision to sell him when we did, but by the same token, we'll try to bring him back if we think it's the right thing to do.

"It is quite possibly an avenue we might try to explore, but there will be a lot of competition if we decide to go down that route because historically the top strikers in the Conference usually end up in the Football League.

"We've even seen Stuart Fleetwood go from Forest Green to the Championship with Charlton this summer, so it is quite possible that Jon will end up either in League One or Two, and there is also the question of what sort of money Halifax want for him."
