Grays Athletic 0-1 Cambridge Utd

Grays Athletic managed to restrict promotion hopefuls Cambridge United to just one goal despite being reduced to ten men early in the second half.

The encounter started at a fairly slow pace but started to come to life when Jon Challinor's shot was saved by Grays goalkeeper Steven Arnold in the 17th minute.

Blues midfielder Stuart Thurgood responded with a long range effort just a minute later but his 35-yard shot went wide of the right-hand post.

Cambridge's Wayne Hatswell had a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the 20th minute but his header from inside the penalty box was off target.

The visitors finally got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 42nd minute when on-loan striker Scott Rendell found the bottom-left corner with a shot from the edge of the area.

Grays saw their chances of finding an equaliser take a massive blow when George Beavan was shown a straight red card for a foul on Daniel Gleeson in the 58th minute.

However, they battled on and kept their opponents at bay for the remainder of the match to restrict the U's to just one goal.

Grays bookings: Thurgood 78, Stuart 90+2, Dinning 90+3.

Sent off: Beavan 59.

Cambridge bookings: Carden 88.

Ref: Darren Sheldrake.

Att: 754.
