Grays 0-3 Ebbsfleet

Ebbsfleet United boosted their chances of the beating the drop this season with a comfortable victory over fellow strugglers Grays Athletic on New Year's Day.

Liam Daish's men saw off the challenge of the Blues on Boxing Day and recorded their first double of the season with the win on Friday afternoon.

The Fleet got an early breakthrough thanks to some suspect defending in the 7th minute.

The Grays defence failed to clear effectively and Peter Holmes was on hand to collect the ball 35 yards out before firing over the 'keeper Preston Edwards with a looping effort which just snuck in under the crossbar.

The hosts were still reeling from the opener when Ebbsfleet struck again in the 13th minute.

Michael West raced onto a pass from Alex Stavrinou before unleashing a powerful shot at goal which was deflected in by team-mate Magno Vieira.

And the contest was effectively over just three minutes before the half-time break when the visitors struck again.

West and Clint Easton combined well on the left flank and the latter sent in an inviting cross which was converted from close range by Ricky Shakes.

Grays were celebrating shortly afterwards when Harlee Deen found the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Grays bookings: None.

Ebbsfleet bookings: None.

Ref: M Thompson (England).
