Rockingham Road

Kettering 2-0 Grays Athletic

Two first-half goals ensured that Kettering Town grabbed the three points from their encounter with Grays Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was much-needed in the Poppies' fight for a play-off place, but more importantly, they broke their duck at home, with the three points representing their first maximum at Rockingham Road in five months.

The home side had the better of their opponents for much of the match and, in all fairness, probably should have won by a greater margin.

Ian Roper opened the scoring for the home side after ten minutes when he was quickest to react to the second ball after John Dempster had hit the bar with a fierce header from a James Jennings free-kick.

After creating the first, Jennings scored the second shortly before the break. Dempster did very well to work some space before sending in a teasing ball which Jennings sent into the back of the net with a stooping header.

Grays came out after the interval looking to get back into the encounter. However, the home side defended sternly and were in no mood to give anything away.

Grays' Alex Rhodes should have done better with his header from a Richard Graham cross, but he was unable to hit the target from not too far out.

Substitute Elliott Charles and Jordan Hadfield both could have added to the home side's advantage but their efforts did not trouble Glyn Garner in the Grays goal and the scoreline remained the same until the final whistle.
