Danny Stevens
Torquay United claimed second position in the Blue Square Premier standings after edging past 10-man Burton Albion at Pirelli Stadium on Monday evening.
The Gulls extended their unbeaten run to 11 games and now boast an impressive total of 77 points from 41 games.
Paul Buckle's side made their intentions known early on and broke the deadlock after ten minutes of play.
Midfielder Danny Stevens latched onto a neat pass from Chris Hargreaves and went on a dribbling run before unleashing an effort from 25 yards which flew into the bottom-right corner.
The visitors continued to create chances but were unable to find that telling final touch to create a second goal.
Their task was made easier in the 36th minute when Greg Pearson was shown a straight red card for a shocking tackle on United striker Tim Sills.
Despite their numerical advantage Torquay were unable to double their tally and the Brewers managed to create a handful of chances, which were spurned.
Michael Simpson's effort ricocheted wide of the target and Michael Byrne blazed his shot over the crossbar from close range.
In the end, Buckle's side held on to claim all three points and reduce Burton's lead at the top of the pile to eight points.
Burton bookings: Webster, Butler.
