Hayes & Yeading 1-1 Stevenage

Stevenage Borough were held to a second successive 1-1 draw as they as they failed to beat Hayes & Yeading in the Blue Square Premier League on Tuesday night.

Graham Westley's side were lucky to have come away with a point however, with goalkeeper Chris Day making a fine save late on to ensure a share of the spoils.

But Boro may well see the game as two points lost rather than a point gained with both Lee Boylan and Yemi Odubade also missing good chances at the death.

Newly-promoted Hayes had given Kidderminster Harriers a fright on Saturday before succumbing to a 1-0 defeat and made life difficult for their visitors at Church Road.

But it was Andrew Drury who opened the scoring for the away side four minutes into the second half.

Lawrie Wilson's quick free-kick to Drury caught the home side napping, which gave the former Lewes player the time he needed to create the goal.

Drury waltzed past three defenders before unleashing a low left-footed shot to leave United keeper Simon Overland with no chance at his near post.

The goal gave Boro more impetus but it was Garry Haylock's side that made it count with an equaliser in the 62nd minute.

Dale Binns found Danny Allen-Page unmarked in the box as he pulled his cross back across goal with the midfielder easily slotting the ball home from close range.

United then almost took the lead in the 71st minute but Day pulled off a sensational double save to keep his side in the tie.

Day initially kept out Adam Green's long range shot before denying Scott Fitzgerald who only needed to stroke the ball home.

Boylan the fired wide from an acute angle before Odubade hit his shot over the bar after coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute.

"It was a cracking game though the Stevenage players were a bit heavy with their tackling. I was impressed with Hayes & Yeading's fighting spirit to come back into the game and then almost win it. Evbery game will need that kind of commitment if they are going to survive in this league.

Come on you Hayes!!"

Certainly one of the better grounds in the League. On one side is the all seated covered Main Stand, which looks quite impressive.
