Graham Westley

Stevenage 1-0 Histon

Stevenage were unconvincing in their win over Histon on Tuesday night but the result sees Graham Westley's charges move four points clear at the top of the Blue Square Premier table.

Jon Ashton bagged the only goal of the match with his 18th minute strike that ensured Boro kept intact their unbeaten record at Broadhall Way.

Westley restored Darren Murphy and Stacy Long to his starting line-up and the decision bore dividends early in the match when the latter's corner was turned in by Ashton from close range.

The same pair were in the thick of the action moments later as another Long corner was flicked on by Ashton. The combination resulted in a chance for Mark Roberts who failed to convert.

It took the Stutes half an hour to carve out their first opening but Andy Pugh struck his effort wide of the upright after he was set up by Daniel Sparkes' cross.

Yemi Odubade and Roberts both wasted opportunities to double the home team's advantage before the break.

Stevenage could not add to their tally in the second half and the league leaders became increasingly jittery towards the closing stages of the fixture.

Pugh saw his effort fly across the face of goal before Boro goalkeeper Chris Day made a stunning save from Nathaniel Knight-Percival's shot.

But Westley's men managed to hang on to their lead and collect the three points and maintain their momentum in the title race.

The visitors, meanwhile, remain in 13th place following a third defeat in five outings.

Certainly one of the better grounds in the League. On one side is the all seated covered Main Stand, which looks quite impressive.
