Southport 1-0 Altrincham

Tony Gray's late strike was enough to hand Southport maximum points against a gritty Altrincham side on Tuesday night.

The striker, who was signed in the summer, slotted past visiting goalkeeper Stuart Coburn in the 82nd minute at Haig Avenue.

It was the Sandgrounders' second victory of the Blue Square Bet Premier season, while the Robins were once again left to rue a late goal.

The hosts missed a number of early chances to take the lead in the game. Midfielder Liam Blakeman, who made his first start of the campaign, wasted two glorious chances.

On both occasions, after being put through down Altrincham's right-hand side, Blakeman failed to test the keeper with his shot.

Altrincham's Damian Reeves proved menacing after the break, but there was no goalmouth action to speak of.

But with just eight minutes remaining in the encounter, substitute played Gray in on goal and his shot took a kind bounce off Alty defender Michael Welch and looped into the back of the net.

Southport are eighth in the standings, while the Robins are rock bottom with just one point from four games.
