Rendell: Bagged a brace
Cambridge United recorded a comfortable victory over Northwich Victoria at the Trade Recruitment Stadium on Saturday to cut the gap on league leaders Burton Albion to five points.
The first half offered up loads of entertainment for the home supporters as Cambridge claimed a 3-1 lead heading into the half-time break.
The U's broke the deadlock after 24 minutes when Chris Holroyd latched onto a through ball from Paul Carden and fired a shot into the back of the net from the edge of the area.
They doubled the advantage five minutes later through on-loan striker Scott Rendell's close-range finish after Victoria goalkeeper Ryan Clarke had blocked shots from both Phil Bolland and fellow loanee Jai Reason.
Northwich managed to pull one back in the 35th minute when Luke Joyce scored on his debut with a superbly struck free-kick which flew into the bottom-right corner.
However, Gary Brabin's side restored their two-goal cushion just two minute later when Rendell found himself on the end of a one-two between Holroyd and Robbie Willmott and fired a shot into the bottom-left corner.
The hosts rounded off an impressive performance in the 80th minute through substitute Andy Parkinson, who stabbed home the ball from close range following an Anthony Tonkin throw-in.
