Northwich 1-2 Wrexham

Play-off hopefuls Wrexham ended a six-match winless streak on Tuesday evening with a hard fought victory over Northwich Victoria at the Victoria Stadium.

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Jansen scored his first goal to help Wrexham rekindle their play-off aspirations.

The visitors came close to taking the lead in the fourth minute as Northwich defender Danny Meadowcroft sliced a dangerous looking cross from Wes Baynes narrowly over the bar.

However, it was the Vics who drew first blood in the 13th minute when Wrexham goalkeeper Ashley Westwood fumbled the ball and striker Kyle Perry picked the loose ball to fire into an unguarded net.

But the Dragons were up to the task and drew level just two minutes later when Jansen hammered a powerful shot from the edge of the area past goalkeeper Ryan Clarke.

Northwich continued to push forward for a second an almost got what they looking for in the 35th minute, but Perry's header from a Lee Elam cross was deflected wide.

Wrexham also had a chance to claim the lead just before the interval but Jansen's effort was blocked and Fairhurst's follow-up cleared the bar.

The Dragons stepped up a gear in the second period and Jansen came close again as he looked to be a constant thorn in the side for the Northwich defence.

Jansen missed a golden opportunity in the 66th minute when rounded Clarke in the area but was unable to find the target from just six yards out.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Nathan Fairhurst fired a well-struck effort from outside the area which flew into the bottom-right corner.

Despite having their fair share of goalscoring opportunities, Northwich were unable to capitalise as Wrexham held on to collect all three points.
