Northwich 2-3 Torquay

Torquay United strengthened their position in the play-off zone with a hard fought victory over a battling Northwich Victoria on Saturday afternoon.

The Gulls were made to work their socks off as a committed Northwich outfit battled tooth and nail in the hopes of recording a much-needed home win.

In fact, the Vics drew first blood in the 34th minute when Lee Elam sent in a looping cross from the right which was met by Kyle Perry, who placed his header back across goal an out of the reach of goalkeeper Scott Bevan.

The visitors had a great chance to equalise in the 40th minute but Tyrone Thompson's close range header went over the crossbar.

Northwich held firm heading into the interval but saw the scoreline levelled just four minutes after the break.

Goalkeeper Ryan Clarke failed to deal with Tim Sills' flicked header and fit-again centre-half Chris Todd followed up with a close range header.

However, the hosts rallied well and reclaimed the lead in the 56th minute when John Allan stabbed home a low cross from Ryan Brown.

Torquay needed a bit of brilliance to get themselves back into the contest and it came in the 68th minute from a Kevin Nicholson free-kick.

Nicholson sent in an inswinging cross from the left and Sills rose above the Northwich defence to head home with a powerful header from 12 yards.

The visitors finally got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 76th minute when Nicholson's long throw made it's way into the six-yard box and substitute Roscoe D'Sane pounced on the loose ball and placed a side-footed effort in the net from six yards.

Northwich bookings: Allan.

Torquay bookings: Sills, Hargreaves.

Ref: Scott Rushton.
