Droylsden snap up Berkeley

New signing Matthew Berkeley is confident he can help relegated Blue Square Premier side Droylsden win the Blue Square North title.

The youngster begun his footballing career with Scottish side Gretna in 2004 before enjoying a loan stint at Workington where he enjoyed relative success.

Berkeley was released by the Anvils in 2007 and joined Altrincham in late September 2007 but only managed to make three appearances.

He left the Robins and re-signed for Workington on 4 October 2007, scoring eleven goals in 27 matches.

Although he had a fruitful season with the Reds, the offer to play for a club closer to home appealed to him more.

The 20-year-old is confident the Bloods could go all the way and told Non League Daily:" Next year Droylsden will be contenders to win it. It's a new challenge. The way they sold the club to me was really interesting, and hopefully I can help them be champions."

Reds boss Darren Edmondson had been keen to retain the Saint Kitts and Nevis Under-20 international but Berkeley had already made up his mind and looks forward to reunite with join up with mana.

Berkeley concluded: "People at the club were so friendly and made me so welcome. I'd never say a bad thing about the club. I enjoyed it there, but it was time to move on. If they sign a few more players, they'll be a good side."
