Histon 1-0 Kettering

Adam Tann's goal dented Kettering's play-off hopes as Histon held on for a 1-0 win in the Blue Square Premier on Monday.

The Poppies are still very much in the hunt for a top five finish but with so many sides closing in, every point is vital. The Stutes are comfortably entrenched in mid table although a few good victories for them could also propel them up the table.

Both sides were guilty of not taking their chances with first Danny Wright seeing his volley saved by player-manager keeper Lee Harper before Bradley Hudson-Odoi's headed effort was easily plucked out of the air.

Anthony Elding was the next player to waste a golden opportunity as Kettering finally got on the offensive after 20 minutes. Kithson Bain found Elding with an inch-perfect cross from the left, but the striker failed to make any significant contact.

Wright had an even better chance to find the target when he followed up Hudson-Odoi's saved shot, but he too failed to make the right kind of contact.

Lee Smith began to assert his influence as Histon upped the tempo but with neither side able to find their range they retreated into the changing rooms with the game still deadlocked at the end of the first half.

Histon began the second period as they had ended the first and substitute Michael Frew set up Wright, but he only succeeded in floating his header wide of the target.

But Frew's next piece of ingenuity after 59 minutes finally reaped rewards as Tann got his head to a telling cross that made it's way into the back of the net.

Kettering looked to respond immediately and Elding brought the best out of Histon stopper Danny Naisbitt. Elding was again denied before Simon Heslop saw his shot go wide of the target. But it was Elding, who wasted his side's best chance as he headed over from close range.
