James Constable

Oxford United 1-0 Barrow

Oxford United got back to winning ways with 1-0 win over Barrow at Kassam Stadium on Saturday in a tightly-contested encounter.

James Constable netted the only goal of the game from the spot in the first-half to maintain the Yellows five point lead at the top of the Blue Square Premier standings.

Constable came close to giving Chris Wilder's charges the lead early on after beating Barrow keeper Stuart Tomlinson, but his effort hit the post.

The home side were then awarded a penalty in the 26th minute when Jack Midson played Constable through on goal and the hitman's legs were taken out underneath him by Tomlinson.

Constable made no mistake from the spot as he fired the ball into the top of the net to leave the keeper with no chance.

The U's squandered a number of opportunities to extend their advantage as Adam Murray and Jamie Cook were also denied by the woodwork.

And they were almost made to pay for their failure to convert their chances when a spirited fight-back by the visitors in the last few minutes saw substitutes Paul Rutherford and Carlos Logan come close, but the U's managed to keep them at bay and hold on for a 1-0 victory.

Oxford Utd bookings: Batt.

Barrow bookings: Tomlinson, Hulbert, Jones.

Att: 5,629.

Ref: K Johnson (Bristol).
