Gateshead 0-3 Histon

Newly-promoted Gateshead endured a tough start to life in the Blue Square Premier as they were defeated 3-0 at home to Histon.

Danny Wright grabbed a brace either side of Bradley Hudson-Odoi's debut goal to take home all three points.

Both teams had chances in the opening period but it took until first half injury time for Wright to find the back of the net.

Gareth Gwillim's near post corner was latched onto by Wright who netted from close range.

The visitors gave a good account of themselves in the second period as they looked for an equaliser with captain Kris Gate hitting the post with his effort.

But with the game winding down, Hudson-Odoi added a second for the Stutes. The substitute latched onto Gwillim's pass on 80 minutes to finish from inside the box, beating Jim Provett to his left.

Wright then made the game safe two minutes later as he slotted the ball home from close range.

Gwillim's free kick was picked up by Nathaniel Knight-Percival, who found Wright inside the box and the striker needed encouragement to score his second of the day.

Gateshead bookings: Turnbull, Francis.

Histon bookings: Oyebanjo, Pope.
