Stephen Reed
Weymouth have announced the signing of utility player Stephen Reed following his release by fellow Blue Square Premier side Cambridge United.
This comes just a few weeks after Reed had signed an extension to his contract for this coming season.
Unfortunately, attitude problems and a falling out with new manager Gary Brabin have put paid to Stephen's Cambridge United career.
This move allows him to return closer to his Cornwall roots.
Reed signed for Cambridge last pre-season, initially as cover for Courtney Pitt.
But an injury crisis saw the youngster drafted into central midfield, and some admirable performances saw him stay in that position for most of the season. He made 47 appearances last season, 35 of them starts, scoring a single goal, the deflected free-kick at Burton Albion.
Shortly after the play-off final, both Reed and then manager Jimmy Quinn exercised the extra years option on Stephen's contract, seeing him through to the end of this season.
However, on Gary Grabin's first day as Cambridge United manager, Reed reportedly demanded a new contract including a big pay rise and a £10,000 relocation fee.
The way he went about the demands was not appreciated by the club and they agreed to a 'mutual consent'. Reed then reneged on this deal and his name was circulated to other clubs.
It is no surprise he has joined the Terras, as they are closer to his place of birth and he has a strong relationship with Weymouth's assistant manager Alan Lewer.
