York City 0-1 Oxford Utd

The Minstermen suffered their second straight league defeat at the hands of Darren Patterson's Oxford United on Tuesday evening.

The hosts handed first starts to teenage left-back Andy McWilliams and former Scarborough defender Jimmy Beadle, who was stationed in a midfield role.

Recalled home striker Leo Fortune-West volleyed over the bar before keeper Josh Mimms had to collect an early Adam Murray cross.

York skipper Emmanuel Panther then drilled an effort across goal, while Martyn Woolford's corner was headed on at the far post by David McGurk and keeper Billy Turley grasped the ball ahead of Leo Fortune-West.

Oxford had a fortunate escape in the 13th minute when Woolford's low 25-yard attempt was mishandled by Turley before deflecting off the keeper and behind for a corner. Fortune-West then crashed a left-footed effort inches wide of the post.

The visitors replied with striker Yemi Odubade volleying wide from long distance before Woolford chipped a left-footed shot wide after a neat exchange with Fortune-West.

York striker Richard Brodie escaped down the right before his deflected effort resulted in a corner, while Barry Quinn was forced to clear from close to his own line following a scramble in the visitors' area.

But Oxford went ahead three minutes into the second-half when midfielder Anaclet drove into the net after Mimms had blocked a header.

The hosts responded with Woolford having a left-footed shot claimed at the second attempt by Turley before opposite number Mimms safely gathered Murray's 25-yard effort.

Manager Colin Walker introduced youngster Liam Shepherd with eleven minutes remaining at the expense of Brodie as his side tried to fight their way back into the contest.

The Minstermen soon went close to an equaliser when Panther's shot struck defender Matt Day on the line and deflected behind.

Woolford then tricked his way around challengers and fired wide of the right-hand post before also swinging a late free-kick over the target.
