Salisbury 1-1 Wrexham

Wrexham had to settle for a point as they drew 1-1 with Salisbury in the Blue Square Premier on Saturday.

Christian Smith had put Wrexham into the lead on 69 minutes but Matthew Tubbs scored from the penalty spot for 10-man Salisbury in the 89th-minute to earn a share of the spoils.

Salisbury keeper James Bittner was called into action early on as he denied Smith in the second minute after Wes Baynes had delivered a telling cross.

At the other end, Andy Mangan then came close with two chances with the first one blocked en route to goal and the second just narrowly off target.

Baynes then saw his shot fizz past the post from Smith's free-kick.

Luke Holden came even closer to opening the scoring when his corner hit the post. The same player then beat Bittner to a loose ball on the edge of the box but despite getting to the ball first, the winger saw his flick fly wide of goal.

Wrexham ended the first half the stronger side but Salisbury were first to threaten in the opening exchanges of the second period as Mani Assoumani was forced to clear off his goalline from a Tubbs' effort.

But it was the visitors who broke the deadlock first as Smith tapped home Curtis Obeng's cross in the 69th minute after it had taken a deflection off Mangan.

Moments later last-man Patrick Cox was adjudged to have fouled Mark Jones and was given his marching orders.

Mangan had a chance to put the game beyond doubt but he headed Holden's cross over the bar when it would have been easier to score.

Wrexham continued to look for a second but were caught out at the Whites flooded forward. Obeng appeared to upend Chris Flood in the box although at a second look he was merely attempting to clear the ball.

Tubbs stepped up and converted the kick with just one minute of the match remaining.

A new looking ground that has been further developed since it was first opened in 1997. The first thing that strikes you about the stadium is that it is sunken, meaning that you enter at the back of the stands and descend into it.
