Barrow 0-1 Salisbury

Salisbury City saw off the challenge of Barrow AFC at Holker Street on Saturday despite being reduced to nine men in the closing stages of the encounter.

The Bluebirds started brightly and Simon Wiles drew a fine save from Salisbury goalkeeper James Bittner on 22 minutes before Andy Bond hit the side netting with a headed effort.

The visitors finally managed to muster their first effort on goal in first-half injury time but Matt Tubbs fired just wide of the right-hand post from the edge of the area.

Salisbury gave a better account of themselves after the break and they came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute.

Chris Flood's effort from the edge of the area looked to be heading for the back of the net but Barrow's Mark Boyd made a vital interception by hacking the ball off the line.

Barrow were then awarded a penalty in the 78th minute when Ronnie Bull was adjudged to have fouled Jason Walker in the area.

However, the resulting spot kick by Walker was saved by Salisbury goalkeeper James Bittner.

And Walker was made to rue his lack of cutting edge as the Whites claimed the lead just three minutes later.

Jake Reid collected a pass from Chris Shephard before firing into the top-left corner from just outside the area.

Salisbury were then reduced to ten men in the 85th minute when Bradley Gray was handed a red card for foul and abusive language.

The visitors were battling hard to hold onto their slender advantage and were reduced to nine men deep in injury time when Ben Adelsbury picked up a second yellow card.

Barrow bookings: Edwards.

Salisbury bookings: Adelsbury, Bittner, Gray, Martin.

Sent off: Gray (86), Adelsbury (90).

Ref: Ross Joyce (Cleveland).

A new looking ground that has been further developed since it was first opened in 1997. The first thing that strikes you about the stadium is that it is sunken, meaning that you enter at the back of the stands and descend into it.
